Details:
‘There’s love in the music and people can relate to the love, regardless of whether you're two years old or 92 years old. For me, music is about love. Love is the message I want to share. I hope people feel that in my music. That makes the hard work worth it.’ - Brian Wilson
Here, for the first time in print, is the history of The Beach Boys, by The Beach Boys.
Their only official book, The Beach Boys by The Beach Boys is the ultimate chronicle of one of the world’s greatest bands. Through their unique sound, complex harmonies, sensational live shows and use of innovative recording techniques, The Beach Boys became woven into the cultural fabric of America and influenced generations of musicians globally. This book documents how it happened.
Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston together provide a combined career narrative especially for this book, and through meticulous compilation from sources worldwide, Carl Wilson and Dennis Wilson’s words are equally represented. Documenting how they went from a Hawthorne garage band to a global phenomenon, they tell the astounding story of their ascent: perfecting their harmonies, initial fame as a surf group, and then their ultimate progression as pioneering recording artists to become one of the most musically complex ensembles in history.
Their text is accompanied by iconic images, never-before-seen negatives and rare ephemera. Given unprecedented access to their personal archives, The Beach Boys by The Beach Boys offers intimate insight into the lives of the group. Also opening their archives are Brother Records and Capitol Records, all of which assist in illustrating their remarkable journey.
Expanding the narrative are a host of contributors who have been involved with or inspired by the band's music, including Peter Blake, Lindsey Buckingham, Eric Clapton, Elvis Costello, Ray Davies, Bob Dylan, Def Leppard, the Flaming Lips, Bobby Gillespie, David Lee Roth, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Jim Kerr, Roger McGuinn, Graham Nash, Jimmy Page, Carly Simon, Pete Townshend, Rufus Wainwright, Thom Yorke, and many more.
A group collaboration, The Beach Boys by the Beach Boys is, in effect, The Beach Boys’ autobiography. Like their music, it is poignant, frank, often humorous but always sincere.
Coming Up: 'Do It Again! The Songs Of Brian Wilson'
Out Oct. 28 from Ace Records. Check availability on Amazon.
Details:
Of the great American songwriters who emerged from the revolutionary 60s, none more than Brian Wilson carried such precocious talent for transcending the era’s pop music tropes with heart-melting melodies, soaring harmonies and idiosyncratic musical settings. “Here Today! The Songs Of Brian Wilson” (CDCHD 1445) was one of Ace’s best-selling releases of 2015. This follow up set reveals again how Brian’s words and music were so strong they made for perfect cover versions.
Compiled by Mick Patrick and packaged with a 28-page booklet crammed with a 9,000-word essay by Kris Needs, the collection comprises songs that span 1963’s ‘The Lonely Sea’ from the Beach Boys’ “Surfin’ USA” LP and ‘Love And Mercy’ from Brian’s eponymous solo album of 1988, performed by artists ranging from wholesome 60s duos Bruce & Terry and Jan & Dean through to latter-day indie bands such as the Pearlfishers, the Fiction Aisle and Epicycle. Lest we forget, Brian’s co-writers on the featured songs include his frequent collaborators Mike Love, Van Dyke Parks and Gary Usher.
Among the many highlights are power pop stalwarts the Rubinoos’ epic chamber chorale rendition of ‘Heroes And Villains’, Lisa Loeb’s subtly impassioned interpretation of ‘In My Room’, self-confessed Beach Boys super-fan Sean Macreavy’s version of ‘Let’s Go Away For A While’ from his “Dumb Angel” album, jazzy song stylist Samantha Sidley’s smoky reading of ‘Busy Doing Nothing’ and a recording of ‘Do It Again’ by Wall Of Voodoo that Brian liked so much he agreed to appear in the promo video.

Coming Up: Dean Torrence - "The Teammates: Twenty Years Of Making Music 1965-1985"
Order now from Amazon.
Details:
Dean Torrence’s The Teammates: Twenty Years Of Making Music 1965-1985 is a curated collection that traverses the decades of the various musical teams Torrence has captained. Whether it was in the producer’s chair, behind the microphone or putting together musical entities, Dean has done it all. This collection includes many of Dean’s rare collaborations with the likes of Mike Love, Jan Berry, Bruce Johnston, Harry Nilsson, and Leon Russell.
Teaming with The Beach Boys/Jan & Dean historian David Beard (also editor/publisher of Endless Summer Quarterly), Torrence raided his vaults and discovered previously unreleased recordings from 1965–1985. Beginning with the ultra-rare single of “Summertime, Summertime” by Our Gang (never available on CD and taken from the original 2-track master), this collection is a treasure trove of rarities and previously unheard music. There are alternate recordings by Jan & Dean, never before heard music from 1973 by Terry Melcher, Bruce Johnston & Torrence, and a slew of rare tracks by Mike (Love of The Beach Boys) & Dean from the early ’80s that has never been made available on CD or digitally until now!
Omnivore Recordings is proud to continue its association with Dean Torrence on this exciting and rare compilation of historical music from one of the early progenitors of rock ’n’ roll. The Teammates: Twenty Years Of Making Music 1965-1985 also offers extensive liner notes by Torrence, a track-by-track conversation with David Beard on the album’s contents and a forward by longtime Jan & Dean associate, and entertainment executive Winston Simone.

She & Him Announce "Melt Away" - Brian Wilson Covers LP
This should be fun. Out Order now from Amazon.
Details:
She & Him’s seventh studio album is a loving, LP-length tribute to one of the greatest living American songwriters and singers, Brian Wilson. Melt Away: A Tribute to Brian Wilson finds Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward diving deep into the legendary artist’s extensive songbook, offering fascinating and delectable new spins on time-honored classics and overlooked gems alike. These fourteen covers are infused with the familiar magic that She & Him fans know and love, opening a new window into Wilson’s iconic catalog. Wilson even features on a song with Zooey and M. Ward for the album, “Do It Again.” The band have enjoyed a friendship, and mutual appreciation, with Wilson over the years and She & Him was previously a guest vocalist on his 2015 album, No Pier Pressure.
“In the spring of 2020, we started a list of our favorite Brian songs — a very long list,” the duo explains. “We chose songs without any regard to their chart performance. The obscure ones hit us just as hard as the more popular songs — and all are ripe for re-imagining, re-interpreting, and re-inventing. Brian writes songs of beauty and loneliness and vulnerability better than anyone — and by sequencing them next to popular songs of confidence and love and fun, it creates a more complete picture of life on earth.”

Listen to "Right Where I Belong" by Brian Wilson and Jim James
A tune from the soundtrack to the new Brian Wilson documentary "Long Promised Road." Not a bad melody, but it sounds like Brian's vocal was recorded over the phone. Not good.
The piano stylings of Brian Wilson spotlighted on new album from Beach Boys' songwriter
Brian Wilson's new album, out Nov. 18, is titled At My Piano, and features instrumental performances of solo and Beach Boys tunes.
Info:
The musical legend returns to his rich catalogue of hits and performs these historically popular songs in their purest form – just Brian, alone with his piano.
The lead single, Brian’s new soothing rendition of the classic "God Only Knows," is available to listen to now.
At My Piano is a deeply relaxing collection of memorable songs that include: "God Only Knows," "Wouldn’t it Be Nice," "California Girls," "Love and Mercy," "Good Vibrations" and many more, performed with the lucid clarity that a solo piano composition creates. A perfect album for sunsets and golden days.
“We had an upright piano in our living room and from the time I was 12 years old I played it each and every day. I never had a lesson, I was completely self-taught. I can’t express how much the piano has played such an important part in my life. It as bought me comfort, joy and security. It has fueled my creativity as well as my competitive nature.
I play it when I’m happy or feeling sad. I love playing for people and I love playing alone when no one is listening.
Honestly, the piano and the music I create on it has probably saved my life.”

"Sunflower" and "Surf's Up" are both strong albums, which saw the rest of the band, particularly Carl Wilson, exert more creative control of the group's music due to Brian Wilson's struggles with mental illness. Surf's Up also saw the band adding a There are incredible harmonies and excellent songs on both albums (with the exception of the unlistenable "Student Demonstration Time" on the latter LP, that is).

According to Rolling Stone:
The album is the brainchild of David Beard, the editor and publisher of the long-running Beach Boys fanzine Endless Summer Quarterly. He brought the various factions of the Beach Boys, minus Brian Wilson, back together for the new version of “Add Some Music to Your Day,” which also includes contributions from Brian Wilson’s daughters Wendy and Carnie Wilson; Al Jardine’s son Matt Jardine; and Mike Love’s children Christian, Hayleigh, and Ambha Love. It was produced by Rob Bonfiglio, who is married to Carnie Wilson and plays guitar in Brian Wilson’s touring band. A portion of the profits will benefit Feeding America.
...The album is rounded out by a previously unreleased version of the 1968 Beach Boys song “Friends,” created by the band members’ kids, and various solo tracks by members of the group and their associates, including Mike Love’s “Ram Raj,” Al Jardine’s “Jenny Clover,” David Marks’ “Long Promised Road,” Bruce Johnson’s “She Believes in Love Again,” and Rob Bonfiglio’s “Golden State.”
